Mission Impossible Fallout

Slight spoilers for Mission Impossible Fallout

The Mission Impossible series has always been a strong series. 1 and 2 are good movies and it really starts to find it’s feet with 3. 4 and 5 are solid movies with crazy stunts from leading man Tom Cruise. All great movies, but not amazing and flawed. For the first time in the series a director returns, Chris McQuarrie directed 5, and for the first time in the series, we have and amazing and easily the best Mission Impossible.

Fallout really sets the tone from the start. We get Ethan Hunt fearing the worst and dreaming a nuclear bomb has went off destroying him and his love from the 3rd movie, Julia. It really brings across the mindset of Ethan Hunt that if he doesn’t do his job, the world is in danger. It’s a subtle theme around the whole movie but a powerful one.

Sitting watching this movie, I am in complete awe of the spectacle and how it was shot. There are times where it feels almost documentary like, but in a good way. You are seeing a man who is doing all of these things for real. Tom Cruise is really driving that bike in oncoming traffic around Paris, Tom Cruise is really doing that halo jump from 25,000 feet, Ethan Hunt is really driving that helicopter doing some of the most dangerous stunts you can do. The lines blur and you believe this world and this character. There’s no stunt doubles, there’s very little CGI and it’s all crazy and amazing to watch.

This movie is a spectacle to take in and watch. For long stretches of the movie, there is really no dialogue and there really doesn’t have to be. The action and the stunts are so well choreographed and timed that you can sit back and enjoy and still understand everything that is happening  in the movie. We get the standard Mission Impossible staples but perfected. We get the full team being useful and key to the mission, not just once but multiple times through out the movie. We get the intensity of time running out and trying to save the world. Everything you would want from a Mission Impossible movie is in this, and better.

There is really nothing negative I can say about this movie. Tom Cruise is at his best Ethan Hunt, we have a great storyline with constant amazing action set pieces with a bit of comedy splashed in there. If Skyfall was James Bond at his peak then Fallout is Mission Impossible at his peak. In fact, I would go one better and say Fallout is better than Skyfall. Your mission is to go see this movie as soon as possible.
